Water is one of the most important components that you use in your coffee. If you use cold filtered water, then you’ll get a better-tasting coffee. This is not harmful to your coffee machine as well. Filtered water is usually recommended for coffee machines because harder water harms the coffee machines. But some people might think that why we can’t use distilled water in a coffee. It has some reasons.

The health of the Coffee Machine

We should not use distilled water in coffee machines because it can harm the coffee machine. Groundwater has a lot of mineral content. But when it is filtered, its mineral content gets reduced. But in distilled water, there are no minerals. Water with low mineral content can sit in the machine, but water with no minerals can’t. The distilled water would harm the material that the coffee machine is made up of.

The flavor of the Coffee

Coffee extraction is a chemical process. Water that is too hard doesn’t have enough “room” for the coffee to bond with the water molecules. Think of a sponge, one saturated with clear water, and the other dry. If you were to submerge the sponge in a bowl of food-colored water, what would happen? While the already soaked sponge would pick up some color, the dry sponge would pick up more. This is similar to what is happening to coffee as it extracts. On the flip- side, too much empty space (too dry of a sponge) will over-extract the coffee, resulting in a bitter flavor.

In the end, we concluded that distilled water should never be used for our coffees. It could be harmful to our health as well as the coffee machine’s health.
